I need a website, but I don't understand how it all works!

Getting a website is similar to starting a business in your town.

You will need:   A "location"  Website location  for your business  =  Webhosting
Customers find you on the web  An "address" for your customers to find you  =  URL or web address  email delivery
Building a website  A "building" from which to sell your products or service  =  Website
Someone to build your "shop"  =  Webmaster or a website building program.  constructing a website
What is Web Hosting?
Webhosting is the virtual "land" you rent for your website.  A webhost is your landlord, who rents you space on their "server"(a specialized computer that is connected to the internet 24 hours a day.)  You rent space for your website by the month, or you can pay up to a year or more in advance.  You often get a discount if you pay for the whole year in advance.
What is a Web Address?
A web address or URL, is a personalized address for your website, that you give out to your customers so they can find you online.  You choose and purchase this address yourself.  If you purchase webhosting, you will be given the option of getting your "first" web address (through them) free.  If you buy your web address separately, it will run around $10.00 for a year.  You do not get to keep a web address for ever, rather you have to renew it every year or you will loose the right to use it.  You can buy several years in advance if you like.  There is usually no discount for doing this, but it does prevent someone else from getting your address.

Web addresses or URL's often start with "www." and end with ".com", ".org" or ".net".
.com =  is a commercial site, and is usually used when you are selling a product or service.
.org  =  is used for organizations like a nonprofit or club etc.
.net  =  is used for a Network.
.edu =  is used for schools or colleges.
There are more web address endings than these.  So if your web address name is taken, try using a different ending.

Make sure your address is active and connected to your website, or it will not show up on the web.  For more information on this call your webhost.
What is Website Building?
Website building is the construction of your online website, the "store front" of your business.  You will either build this yourself with a simple program provided by your webhost, or build it with a program you purchase, or you will pay someone to build your website for you.  Paying a Webmaster can get costly and usually starts around $3000.00 and can run up to $10,000.00.  Most of the time, these costs ARE justifiable.

I offer a one page html site for $300.  You can have a separate contact page for free if you need one.  Beyond that, each new page is $150 based on the same design template.

If you can't afford web hosting, a web address or website building, there are a number of free websites out there that will give you a simple way to put your website on the web.  The up side is it's free!  The down side is the cost to you in time, frustration with design decisions and the limitations of the site builder program.  I suggest that you purchase your own web address even if you use a free site.

I hope this article has been helpful to you!
